Adrian Newey vs Julien Draper Crash On Board

October 20thSo it has been a very busy end to the season for Julien, over the past five weeks he has driven a mix of cars at some very different events.Goodwood RevivalJulien competed in the RAC TT, the main attraction of the weekend, which was a two driver race over 1 hour. Julien drove the unique Aston Martin P214, one of three DB4 Aston Martins that were custom built by the factory for competing at Le Mans during the early 60's. There were tricky conditions over the race, which worked in the favour of Julien and team mate Stuart Graham. Due to damp conditions, and later heavy rain, the more powerful cars could not use all their grunt effectively, benefitting the more nimble Aston.They finished 6th from 12th on the grid, so a very strong result. Stuart did a particularly fantastic job to bring the car home in one piece. British GTJulien finished the last two rounds of British GT, at Donington and Silverstone, in the Mtech Ferrari 458, a big step up from the Ginetta G55 GT3.The 458 is a brilliant machine, and with over 500 bhp it is very quick. Limited test time in the car, due to budget and timing, meant it took longer than expected for Julien to adapt. However at Donington he eqauled the pace of the other 458s in qualifying. Unfortunately at Donington, the race was ruined by a stop-go penalty, made worse by radio failure. As a result Julien's team mate misunderstood the instructions which resulted in finsihing 2 laps down by the end of the 3 hour race.At Silverstone Julien drove with his brother, Matthew Draper, finishing 8th from 13th, a strong effort. Silverstone 24 HoursJulien competed in the Silverstone 24 Hour race, driving the Topcats Mosler owned by Andrew Beaumont. This was so nearly an amazing race. At the 20 hour mark, the Topcats run Mosler was leading by 4 laps; 4 hours left and looking good for the overall win. At that point, however, Freddie Hetherington had rear brake failure at the end of the national straight burying him in the tyre wall. Fortunately Freddie was not injured, but the car was out.This was a very dissapointing finish...July 25thThe 2011 Silverstone Classic.A brilliant weekend at one of Europe's largest historic race meetings.Julien had the privilege of driving two very beautiful 60's race cars on the Silverstone GP circuit. One in particular is a very special car, the Aston Martin DB4 Zagato, which was driven by Sir Stirling Moss at Goodwood and also driven by Michael Salmon at Le Mans. The other car was an Alfa Romeo TZ1.The Italian Historic Car Cup in which the little Alfa was competing, was full of other varied machinery, so the aim of the race was to beat the three other TZ1's. Julien qualified 35th overall which was 5th in class and the second of the four TZ1's. The race was going very well with Julien the lead TZ1, when on the 25th minute he had to unfortunately retire due to a rear left puncture.The DB4 Zagato was entered in the RAC Pre 63 TT. In qualifying Julien drove very well and managed to put the car on the second row of the grid in fourth place. There were hopes that the car would earn a podium finish in the race. Julien started strong, he had taken third place from the Ferrari GTO on the opening lap. However by the third lap Julien had engine oil pouring into the cockpit and all over his feet. He also lost power, and having lost position to both the GTO and a Cobra he dived into the pits. Unfortunately a seal had come lose, the boys did there best to temporarily fix it and sent Julien on his way again. However the damage was done. Julien did manage to put in some very quick laps and finished the race."Although a dissapointing weekend because the cars did not get the results they both deserved it was still brilliant. It is such a pleasure to drive 60's race cars, the whole driving experience is totally different to a modern car and so much fun! The Silverstone Classic is an amazing meeting and it was just such an honour to drive these two cars at such an event. A big thank you to my dad."
